TIPS & TRICKS

1. TIPS AT CLUB LEVEL

  • When communicating with a deaf player through an interpreter, it is important to always make eye contact with the deaf player.

  • Organize a basic Flemish sign language (VGT) course for your trainers. This can help them communicate with the deaf or hard of hearing player through a number of gestures during training. More information can be found at www.doof.vlaanderen . You can also always look for an online dictionary of Flemish sign language (VGT).

  • Discuss with the athlete which communication he prefers.

  • When communicating with the players in writing, use simple language.

2. TIPS FROM TRAINERS FOR TRAINERS

  • Make sure you always make contact with the player before explaining anything. When the player is not looking at you, it means that his attention is not on you and therefore he does not know what to do.

  • These athletes often use lip reading to understand what to do. Make sure that you articulate clearly during your explanation and speak slowly enough.

  • Let the referee know in advance that a player is deaf or hard of hearing. Then the referee can take this into account and also knows that it is possible for this player to continue playing in the event of a foul.

  • Visually illustrate your workouts. For example, you can sketch the exercise or use viewing guides.
