U21 Deaf Devils fourth at the European Championship 2018!
Our Belgian Deaf Devils U21 have qualified for the EDSO 2nd European Championship in Sweden. From 1 to 11 August 2018 they will represent Belgium in a group with Poland, the Czech Republic and Turkey. The other European Championship participants are Greece, Ukraine, Russia and host country Sweden.
Our national team does lose in the small final against Russia.
Our Deaf Devils didn't start super at the European U21 Championship in Sweden. They drew 2-2 against Poland and lost 3-1 to Turkey. So it was over or over in the last group match against the Czech Republic. Despite the pressure, it went very smoothly, the Belgians made it with no less than 10-1. Senne Dierckx scored nine (!) Times.
Because of that solid win, the U21 Deaf Devils jumped to the second place in group B. It gave the right to a ticket for the semi-final against Ukraine. Unfortunately, the team did not reach the final, the Ukrainians were too strong for that, 4-2 after extra time.
In the small final, Russia was the opponent. The Russians were a size too big and won 2-5. With a fourth place at this European Championship, our U21 Deaf Devils can return to Belgium with their heads held high.
Coach Alain Wuytjens is responsible for the U21 Belgian Deaf Devils and hopes for a place in the semi-finals. The Belgian Deaf Devils play their first game on Thursday, August 2 against Poland.
In 2016, the EDSO deaf sports federation set up a new team: the U21 Belgian Deaf Devils. Their first big challenge is the European Championship, from 1 to 11 August in Stockholm.
